Ever speculate about what were the most significant new developments in agricultural machinery during the 19th

Ever speculate about what were the most significant new developments in agricultural machinery during the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries? I was asked this some years ago and this is the list I came up with. I don’t believe any of them, with the possible exception of the cotton gin, can be attributed to a single individual, but were the product of many curious and ingenious people who made incremental improvements to the work of their predecessors. I. Cotton gin.  In colonial times, cotton cloth was more expensive than linen or wool, due to the extreme difficulty of separating the seeds from the clinging fibers. One man could pick the seeds from only about one pound of cotton fibers per day. Eli Whitney built, in 1793, a machine consisting of a row of close-set wheels with saw-like teeth around their perimeters. The wheels protruded through narrow slits between metal bars into a hopper filled with cotton bolls. As the wheels revolved, the teeth caught the cotton fibers and pulled them through the slits which were too narrow for the seeds to pass, thus separating the two. Whitney’s cotton gin allowed a thousand pounds of cotton to be cleaned in the time it took one man...

Light quality and performance battle the connected SSL push at lighting industry confab (MAGAZINE)

Networks and smart lighting remained in the spotlight at LightFair 2016, but Maury Wright reports that lighting designers and specifiers may still care more about the quality of LED-based products than value-added, lighting-centric features. Networks and smart lighting remained in the spotlight at LightFair 2016, but MAURY WRIGHT reports that lighting designers and specifiers may still care more about the quality of LED-based products than value-added, lighting-centric features. LightFair International (LFI) 2016 took place during the last week of April, moving the West Coast venue to San Diego, CA for the first time, but still attracting more than 25,000 registrants to the coastal setting. The predominant theme at the event was the same networked-lighting story and concept of new services and applications that dominated the earlier Strategies in Light (SIL)/The LED Show and Light+Building (L+B) shows. Exhibitors at LFI, however, seemed less certain as to what exactly lighting designers and specifiers will pay a premium for in terms of intelligence, connectivity, and the movement toward solid-state lighting (SSL) as a key cog in the Internet of Things (IoT) movement. Make no mis...

14 year old moves to Boston; wins regional figure skating competition

“I think I was around 6 years old and I think I went up to my mom one morning and I was just like. ‘you know what Mom, I want to start ice skating;” Pierson said. “And she was like, ‘Alright, I’ll sign you up for hockey.’ And then I was like no I want to figure skate. She didn’t question it and she was like alright, I’ll sign you up for the weekly classes they have here.” “When he wanted to take skating lessons, I assumed he wanted to take hockey lessons to learn how to play hockey,” said Margaret Pierson, Van’s mom. “So I said I would take him and sign him up for hockey and he said no I want to learn how to skate, figure skate, so I said OK lets sign up for ice skating, nope figure skating.” “He just never wanted to stop after each session. He just wanted to sign up again every time, so he just loved it.” Van quickly grew out of the group lessons and started private coaching lessons with nationally known figure skater Kathie Kader. “When he started getting more serious, she would tell him stories of how she went away at age 14 to train in Colorado,” she said. “I remember thinking there’s no way you are going anywhere, don’t even think about it, that’s ri...

Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1-Inch High Torque Impact Wrench

At the 2018 New Product Symposium, Milwaukee announced that they’ve been working on a cordless solution for high-torque impact wrench users. They predicted its launch in Q4 of 2018, but by the time Q4 actually rolled around, Milwaukee postponed the release for more testing. Well, that day is drawing closer and the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1-Inch High Torque Impact Wrench is slated for a June 2019 release. SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERSgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1389975325257-0′); }); The biggest deal about this tool is that it exists. With it, Milwaukee is giving you another opportunity to finally ditch your compressors and generators. Since the Milwaukee 1-inch high torque impact wrench weighs 7 lbs less than the leading corded option, going cordless is a legitimate alternative. It provides even more power than the Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench for linemen. Cordless has to be able to keep up with corded and pneumatic tools to make the switch worthwhile. Milwaukee claims that this is the world’s most powerful cordless impact. Its spec sheet boasts 1800 ft-lbs of nut-busting torque to go along with 1650 RPM and 2450 BPM. With the Milwaukee M18...

The statistics are staggering. The global health care industry is responsible for two gigatons of carbon

The statistics are staggering. The global health care industry is responsible for two gigatons of carbon dioxide each year, or 4.4% of worldwide net emissions — the equivalent of 514 coal-fired power plants. If the global health care sector were a country, it would be the world’s fifth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Those are some of the eyepopping numbers from a September 2019 report titled Health Care’s Climate Footprint from Arup and Health Care Without Harm (HCWH), an international organization that’s working to make health care ecologically sustainable. The numbers are particularly disturbing for the United States: The United States is the world’s highest emitter of health care greenhouse gases, accounting for 27% of the global health care footprint (China, at number two, accounts for 17%). How can teaching hospitals and laboratories improve their ecological efforts? Many institutions have already launched environmental initiatives, from energy conservation to green lab programs. In December 2018, seven Boston-area teaching hospitals and clinical institutes, including Harvard Medical School, announced a commitment to decarbonize. The University of California system ha...
